County or secondary highways are the unrecognized backbones of West Virginia's road network. 37 of these roads have existed in Mercer County, numbered off from north to south in roughly geographic order.

All odd-numbered highways through 29 and even-numbered highways through 38 were established in tandem with the State Road Commission Act in 1933, while higher numbers are later additions.
