Overview

County Route 34 is a road in south-central Mercer County connecting Green Valley to the Twelvemile Creek valley south of Princeton. Its surfacing quality varies wildly, with the west end being two-laned but other portions being virtually impassable. It is of limited utility as a through road, and the east end presently terminates with no connections.

History

CR 34 was commissioned in 1933, and partially routed upon pre-existing infrastructure from the late nineteenth century.

A notable exception is the segment running through the Twelvemile Creek valley between CR 34/1 and 34/3, which doesn't appear on any pre-1930s topographic map.

In a mirror to some of CR 9's suspect alignments, this segment may have been incorporated into the highway because it had recently been constructed in 1933, and had superior grading to other nearby roads. Yet, it came to nought. This segment passed through uninhabited land, making it practically useless, and was ultimately all but abandoned even though it lingers on the map.

The east end of CR 34 originally intersected with CR 27. In the late 1960s, however, CR 27's course was commandeered for the construction of Interstate 77...resulting in this road connection being stubbed off. CR 34 presently dead-ends at the end of a short extension inherited from CR 27, serving as a billboard access road. (USGS, 1924/66; WVDOT, 2019.)
