Overview

County Route 27 is a road in central Mercer County. Its current configuration consists of two discontinuous segments.

Its north segment serves as an access road between downtown Princeton and US 460 Corridor Q. The south segment resumes 700 metres east, and effectively serves as a connector to I-77. Both segments are two-laned with a centre line for their entire course.

History

CR 27 was commissioned in 1933, and routed upon pre-existing infrastructure from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The course of the Virginian Railway runs parallel to the road (as well as under it, lest we forget the Oney Gap Tunnel!), and it's probable that the construction of one transportation conduit helped spur the other.

Originally, this highway served the community of Ingleside south of Princeton. This changed in the late 1960s, when the construction of Interstate 77 through Rocky Hollow obliterated the south course of the older road...and made Ingleside inaccessible to bike and pedestrian traffic. In Ingleside, a stub of CR 27 survives as CR 12/5.

Part of the north portion was obliterated by the construction of US 460 Corridor Q in 1978.

Since CR 27 no longer directly connected to Ingleside and because several similar road names were in use, WVDOT officially changed the title of "Ingleside Road" to "Twelvemile Road" in the 1990s...a reference not to road length but to Twelvemile Creek, the East River tributary that flows through Ingleside.

The south end of CR 27 morphs into I-77. Surviving stubs of the original road include CR 12/5, and an extension of CR 34 serving as a billboard access road. (USGS, 1924/66; WVDOT, 2019.)

Fractional spur roads

[CR 27]

CR 27 isn't the only highway that got the short end of the I-77 and Corridor Q stick. Two of its spur roads, 27/2 and 27/4, were also obliterated by subsequent road construction.
