County Route 12 is a former secondary highway in northwest Mercer County, connecting Spanishburg, Lashmeet, and Rock. The north leg ran through the Rich Creek valley, with the rest of the road being rugged and mountainous.
CR 12 was commissioned in 1933, and routed upon pre-existing infrastructure from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A portion of this pre-existing road was straightened prior to the advent of route numbering, leaving behind segments that were adopted as CR 12/2 and 12/3.
In the early 1940s, WV 12 was commissioned in Mercer County. This presented a problem for identification, as the number had already been used for this secondary highway.
The solution was to simply assign CR 12 a new number. And voilà: CR 12 became CR 71/12!
In spite of being renumbered, the course of this road has been unchanged since its inception.
Due to the shared pool of numbers, spurs for CR 12 are described on the WV 12 and 112 page.
