Overview

County Route 24 is a road in eastern Mercer County. The west end functions as a continuation of Eads Mill Road, picking up where CR 14 leaves off in parallel to the West Virginia Turnpike. The road then however takes a sharp turn east, and gradually ascends to a terminus on a ridge west of Elgood.

Unusually for county highways, CR 24 is built to near-primary highway standards, with two lanes and a centre stripe.

History

CR 24 was commissioned in 1933, and routed upon pre-existing infrastructure from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its course has been unchanged since its inception.

Fractional spur roads

[CR 24]

County Route 24/1 is "Old Pisgah Road," which is a bit of a misnomer since this road and the "new" Pisgah Road emerged on maps simultaneously. CR 24/2 was originally a through road that would have grazed the south end of today's Athens Reservoir; however, most of its course was later abandoned.
