Overview

County Route 5 is a fairly lengthy single-lane road in northwest Mercer County, running atop Nubbin Ridge from Spanishburg to Bluff Mountain and the Raleigh County line. The north portion of the road is unpaved.

History

The infrastructure of CR 5 dates to the late nineteenth century. Starting from its intersection with CR 19/8, the southeastern leg carried WV 4 and possibly US 19 in the earliest days of West Virginia's numbered highway system.

CR 5 was commissioned in 1933. Its course has been unchanged since its inception.

CR 5 crosses the historical path of the Beeson lumber railway that interfaced with the N&W at Springton in the early twentieth century. One of its spur roads, CR 5/2, was built directly over the railway grade.
