CR 44

Overview and history

County Route 44 is one of several numeric anomalies in Mercer County that complicate the highway map.

The road is a former alignment of WV 44 and WV 20 in Lerona that was bypassed in the early to mid 1950s. Rather than give this decommissioned stub a fractional designation, the WVSRC instead decided to memorialize the past by assigning it the number CR 44...preserving the numeric designation that WV 20 had had from about 1930 to 1941.
