Starting with the "81" dated base (used from 1980 to 1987), the two-alpha format began to be employed for all truck plates. Staggered registration was initiated in 1984; resulting in the use of two different "84" stickers. As before, several different die and stamping variations exist.

Yet another new truck issue was introduced in 1987; for expirations in 1988. Like the wide-die graphic passenger plates of the same era, these plates remained in use until being phased out gradually in the early 2000s. This series saw fewer variations than prior issues, but there are two distinct varieties of stacked characters (most notable in the "A"); as well as scattered variations of caption dies. A few late-period "A" plates were also produced with the narrow dies used on the subsequent graphic plates.

Graphic truck plates were first introduced in late 1994; coinciding with the change to narrow dies. Unlike prior issues, these plates continued the numbering series of the prior base and were distributed to new registrants only. These plates were replaced in 2009, and stragglers with later stickers are rare.

In 2000; coinciding with the change to the "black-letter" base, truck plates began using stickers for weight class identification and followed a single numbering series with no coding. All-numeric plates were issued from 100001 to 999999, followed by a two-alpha series from AA to AV and from DG on. The intermediate letter blocks were apparently skipped to avoid conflicts with temporary plates, which also used an AB 1234 format at the time.
