Comments
Out of the Vein as an album seemed a long time coming: Over three years had passed since Blue had been released, and for two of those years there was virtually nothing but static and the occasional side project to come out of the band. A lot had changed musically as well: This album was the first to feature the talent of Tony Fredianelli as guitarist, and the sound of the band itself continued to evolve. While it's still an enjoyable listen and arguably the best record of 2003, I have a sneaking suspicion that some indefinable element from the first two albums may be missing here: The mood of the record seems thematically lighter, with fewer musical left-turns such as "Camouflage" or "Slow Motion" in store. Initial copies come bundled with a DVD titled Hiding Out, compiling clips and amusing commentary with the band.
- Two singles were released from this album: "Blinded" and "Crystal Baller."
- In some instances, the song "Blinded" carries the subtitle of "When I See You."
- The cover of Out of the Vein was a Mick Rock stock photo doctored to add Third Eye Blind references to the guitar.
- Most of the recording for Out of the Vein was conducted at Mourningwood, the band's self-constructed studios in San Francisco.
- The original, tentative title for the album was Crystal Baller. The album was originally scheduled for release in summer 2002.
