Sony Music catalogue numbering system
The Sony catalogue numbering system was originally the system used by BMG (Bertelsmann Music Group), owner of the RCA and Arista labels. It consists of an 11-digit sequence shared with the UPC. The first five digits are a semi-constant prefix tied to the manufacturer (label), followed by five digits indicating the product (release), followed by a suffix indicating the format (1=LP, 2=CD, 4=cassette, 7=7" single). UPC numbers have an additional twelfth digit that functions as a checksum; however, the printed catalogue numbers omit this.
BMG began using this format in June or July 1991. Until 2003, each individual label and international subsidiary in the BMG fold had its own parallel numbering series. This came to an end around March 2003, when a single worldwide numbering series was imposed across all labels in the interest of efficiency and consistency.
In about October 2005 the Sony labels were brought into the system as well, following the completion of the Sony-BMG merger. Sony bought out Bertelsmann's stake in the venture two years later, and for the duration of Walk the Moon's tenure, RCA has been a unit of Sony Music.
UPC codes have been allocated to Sony in blocks allowing for ranges of 10000 to 100000 catalogue numbers apiece. Meanwhile, Sony tears through roughly 20000 numbers per year...meaning that the progression is confusing, seemingly non-sequential, and difficult to track. Nevertheless, BMG and Sony have progressed through the following ranges of numbers in order:
- 82876 50000 - 82876 89999 (2003-2006)
- 88697 00000 - 88697 99999 (2006-2011)
- 88691 90000 - 88691 99999 (2011-2012)
- 88725 40000 - 88725 49999 (2012)
- 88765 40000 - 88765 49999 (2012-2013)
- 88883 70000 - 88883 79999 (2013)
- 88843 00000 - 88843 09999 (2013-2014)
- 88875 00000 - 88875 19999 (2014-2016)
- 88985 30000 - 88985 49999 (2016-2018)
- 19075 80000 - 19075 99999 (2018-2020)
- 19439 70000 - 19439 99999 (2020-)
