The Wisconsin Pages:

Passenger, 1967-1979

The first reflectorized series of license plates was introduced in 1967 (for 1968 expirations). These new "butter" plates featured a modified format with full state name at bottom and were used for five years.

Due to the extended period of issuance for this base, two-letter "AB 1234"-format plates were employed when month series overran their one-alpha allocations. Two variations of state name and slogan dies were used on this base. In addition, a fair number of unissued leftover plates from near the end of the series exist in collectors' hands.

A second series of reflectorized license plates was issued in 1972 for expiration in 1973. These plates followed the same format and conventions as the "68" series and were used for seven years; longer than any prior Wisconsin plate issue.

A notable die variation in this stretch employs the use of an crude, male-only die set. In addition to the more gradually-tapered stamping quality posed by the use of this set, these dies also contain some distinctive features (like a straight-lined "7") that would permanently reappear in the conventional die set during the 1980s. Once again, at least two variations of state name and slogan dies were used on this base.

Note: I have yet to confirm "crude die" plates for the February or May month series, but I suspect they do exist. "Crude die" plates appear to have been produced in three runs; not all of which covered all months of the year.
